I wonder in today's age if people would have cared about batting average more than HRs and RBIs. Dude led the league in 7 years for batting average, but never got higher than 6hh in MVP voting (other than his first full time year which was 3rd.) And he was stealing 50 bases in the early days too!

Spawns another good question. Best player to never win an MVP? Obviously a lot of defensive players in the NFL to be considered. Walter Payton would be first of mind for me.

Didn't Payton win early in his career--the year he had 1800 yards? I can't remember. I can't believe he didn't win more, if the NFL has an MVP award.

I think he was MVP in '77, wasn't he?

So what have we learned so far? Tony Gwynn never finished higher than 6th in MVP voting except when he finished 3rd & Walter Payton was the greatest player to never win an MVP except for the time he won one.

I love this place. :drunken:

Why didn't Gwynn win one? Because his consistent singles and doubles production didn't put butts in seats. And no one cared about late games in San Diego.

And his best year was 94.

Loved the dude, best hitter in my lifetime. If he was in a major market he'd have won a couple.

Eric Dickerson/Tony Dorsett

Did Dickerson change his name to Dorsett for religous reasons like Kareem?

Yeah. Sealed it after his 275 against Minnesota I believe.
