NEW YORK – Computer plate umpires could be called up to the major leagues at some point during the next five seasons.
Umpires agreed to cooperate with Major League Baseball in the development and testing of an automated ball-strike system as part of a five-year labor contract announced Saturday, two people familiar with the deal told The Associated Press. The Major League Baseball Umpires Association also agreed to cooperate and assist if Commissioner Rob Manfred decides to utilize the system at the major league level. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because those details of the deal, which is subject to ratification by both sides, had not been announced.

Bring it on. Umpires have had their chance to call an honest strike zone and they won't do it.

Next thing you know they might even call carries and traveling in the NBA.

Yeah most of these guys will be gone and retired by the time robots replace them. Its not about the health of the union, it is about them.

Can't come soon enough. It seems every few postseason games get impacted by an inconsistent strike zone

Offense will plummet to nothing with a real, legal strike zone.

Heard a suggestion on Olney's podcast that MLB adopt an NFL style electronic communication system between the dugout and pitchers/catchers to deal with sign-stealing. Assume it would have to be one-way or some sort of non-verbal system. Couldn't have the catcher talking back to the dugout or arguing with the pitcher via earpieces. Pitcher could do the glove over the mouth thing. Seems like too much of a distraction.

Umps should do it, less work for them. Obviously there's some umps with huge egos that won't want to give up that power, but I'm sure they'll find a way to grandstand just fine.

It will drop, yes. Too bad these poor little MLB hitters will just have to swing more. If we're lucky, we might get back to more distributed hitting....not all or nothing Offense.

Regardless, I'll take a 2-1 pitchers duel any day. Faster pace to the game.

I'm all for an electronic zone, but one question I haven't seen answered is how the systems account for different heights of players. They can't really put sensors in the uniforms (plus, players would probably move them around to minimize their zone), so the adjustment has to come from the camera. Unless of course they are just going with the same zone for everyone, which doesn't make sense either. Or, I suppose they could program each player's height into the system in advance.
