This goes far beyond this single incident but it would be tough to argue that there hasn't been a change in the way we judge human interactions. For most of my life we didn't jump to assume the worst of the other person, i.e. if he said he was calling a mascot and that seemed eminently reasonable, we accepted such as fact and moved on. But that's changed to a paradigm wherein the actual words or intentions of the conveyer don't matter but everything is judged based on the feelings of the receiver.
