Absolutely, where I went to high school you'd maybe be called some combination of weirdo, loser, or creep for dating someone a grade behind you, definitely called those things dating someone 2 years behind, and be called much worse for someone 3 classes behind you.

Like I said, 1 year, that's a maybe. With a class of 700+ you looked desperate. I'd say 95% of the people who dated in our high school dated someone in the same grade.

I had a freshman girlfriend when I was a senior. I wasn't the only one who wanted to date her either. She was hot. No one was gonna make fun of a guy for being with her. I was 16 and she was 14. 17 and 12 does seem pretty extreme, but I think if you were in the same school at the same time, it's generally not strange.

But I'm an old man. Things seem to be viewed differently now.

She was 2 years behind, but I didn't even know my wife in high school. She was 2 grades ahead of me in college when I was 21 when we stared dating though. 2 years behind at LT put you on a different campus too since it was split 9-10 and 11-12, so it wasn't even like the same school.

I felt like KD did in high school. The hunt was part of the experience. The underclassmen that were 2 to 3 years younger threw themselves at you. They were happy if you remembered their names. I didn't knock it, but it didn't take any game to get them. I subconsciously carried that into adulthood for a few years too long.

For the most part I haven't even really assigned a moral judgment to it (at least a 1-2 years thing). I've only been saying you'd get trash talked about it at my high school, as spoiler alert, high school kids like to talk shit.

I wasted a few years in junior college taking important classes like EMT certification, Hapkido, lifeguarding, and bowling. I was a very popular freshman when I finally did go to college when I was 21.

I was a stubborn idiot who would create a set of principles and go to extremes to adhere to them. There's also a little adrenaline junkie that flows through my veins. The hunt satisfies that.

Never saw it or heard it at my school with guys but we were a tiny school and it was extremely common for a 1-2 year difference. I don't think I can recall a senior/freshman relationship though. Now, if a girl dated someone younger than she was, even one grade, those biological females would just destroy her.
