Pretty dumb to have a rule for one guy.

How about when Leury is DHing and Eloy is in left and LaRussa wants a defensive replacement for Eloy but doesn't want to lose his bat. Can he move Eloy to pitcher for one pitch and have him then replace Leury at DH?

Wouldn't Eloy have to face the minimum three batters or get out of the inning successfully in that example?

The rule only applies to the starting pitcher. So there has been some talk about some younger ex-college guys who might be able to be an "opener" and pitch 4-5 batters once or twice a week and still DH the rest of the game. A guy like Jake Cronenworth of the Padres was a reliever in college and the Rays had him pitching occasionally when he was still in AAA in 2019.

Does the 3 batter rule still stand?

It was still on the books in 2021, see Rule 5.10(g):

and I haven't been able to find anything that indicates it's off the books.

So what's the advantage to starting the game with no DH? A 1st 1/2 inning of better defense? Anything else?

This is just a pandering rule. He should have to leave if he's taken out as a defender.

Does seem unfair to 29 teams.

Another puzzling rule:

"Also, rosters will be expanded from 26 to 28 players through May 1 to help make up for the condensed spring training. While teams will be allowed to carry just 13 pitchers starting May 2 when rosters return to 26 players, there is no limit on how many they can have before that."

Who cares how many pitchers a team carries? Was there a limit in previous years?

I get it. He’s a star in a league desperate for stars. I loved when the new Cubs outfielder said he loved Mike Trout. I don’t think many American kids idolize Trout.

I just don’t like baseball pandering. Strategy and tradition are what the game has to sell. Not a race to the bottom to feature stars through gimmicks.

I've always thought the way the DH rule is written was dumb. Why is it strictly for pitchers? Obviously, it would be used for pitchers the vast majority of the time, but let's say you wanted to let Bumgarner bat and DH for Nick Ahmed, why shouldn't you be able to?

And this just makes it worse. It's a rule for one guy. It's something the NBA would do in deference to a "superstar." But baseball isn't that kind of game. I know MLB likes selling Ohtani jerseys, but this is bullshit.

If you're going to do this, you should change the DH rule as I describe above- You can substitute a batter for any defensive player including a pitcher and if a player is removed defensively he can remain as DH via a double switch. That would be fine.

The NFL changed the kick-off rules because of one guy
It happens.

Let him hit a few extra times, it’s a nothingburger. People complain they don’t market stars enough, well this should help. Until he blows his arm out in May and it doesn’t matter anymore.
