I am curious to understand what he’s seeing or what he’s trying to accomplish. He’s way too smart to piss away money, but the only logical explanation is that he’s just trying to buy a championship.

Which is a crazy reason to dumb a half billion dollars given the sport.

There is a revenue and value element to what he is doing. Obviously he going to sell more tickets and concessions at higher prices, increase the broadcasting rights, get more advertising, but most of all increase the value of the franchise. He will probably not have to shell out money out of his own pocket, but rather be able to use increased cash flow and bank loans to pay for stuff.

But he is worth $17.5B, so it is a very expensive toy but well within his means.

If the Mets win the World Series and become perennially contenders, the value of the franchise will probably go up by one billion or more. He understands capital gains.

He's a maniacal Mets fan from childhood. What Ricketts claims to be but wasn't. He's never going to sell the team, but he also knows that team prices never go down over time. And he wants to beat the crap out of the Yankees: on the field, in public perception, and financially.

It's what Jerry Reinsdorf should have done in 1994 instead of leading the work stoppage.

Isn't he still under contract with the Dodgers?

The Dodgers are likely to release him. They don't want the negative PR for a guy who hasn't pitched in a year and a half.

Even releasing him, they now owe a $23 million contract for this year that they didn't owe yesterday

Conforto 2 years 36 million to the Giants. That may qualify as the worst short term contract of the off-season.

Damn….crazy. Boras working overtime. That ESPN+ article on how the Mets deal went down might need a part two.

They might just change the last 4-5 years of that contract into team options.

Only if there are huge buyouts. No reason to have a long deal where the team can opt out that early.

If he has back problems, I don’t want him for 3 years, let alone 10.

Sounds like a previous leg issue from the minors. It must be something significant if two teams now are pausing on the deal.

True. Buyouts would be a sensible compromise.

Let’s have the Cubs jump in and sign him. Correa at third, Swanson short, and Hoerner at 3b.

Might be the best defensive infield in recent memory. Maybe the Olerud, Ventura, Sanchez, Alfonzo IF of the early 2000 Mets?

Kap & Gordon Wittenmyer said Correa openly talked about the plate in his leg and it was common knowledge. Now in the end of '22 it's catching teams by surprise?

Yeah if Kap and Gordo say it, it must be true.

I mean, they might have know about it but that doesn't mean they had seen the x rays and had their doctors look at it.

The Red Sox have been a curious mix of frugality and profligate spending this year.
