Of course it is. Last year's free agents are pissed. Ohtani's deal is going to be for $60M a year.

I don't know. For Olney's theory to be true, things would have to slow down next year, and keep getting slower as we get closer to the end of the current CBA. I don't see that happening.

Lesser players have gotten $40M+. The owners would have a lot of explaining to do if they stiffed the Japanese superstar.

I think we're actually agreeing. I think Ohtani is going to get crazy money and I also think everyone else who gets a big contract next year is going to get more than a comparable player received this year.

Olney seemed to think that this year was a special case, because it was the first year after the CBA. Therefore, his point was that the market might slow next year. I don't see that happening.

Rumor has it that Correa failed his physical.

I don’t really understand the point people are trying to make when they compare spending & franchise valuations.

You make an interesting point. Why should the goal of the highest valued team to just spend a smidge over the next one below you. Probably diminishing returns setting astronomical precedence in salaries when other teams chasing you can’t spend it.

What I don't understand is that Boras has his own medical team as well. If he was going to fail a physical, wouldn't Boras have known about it? Unless it was something that cropped up between the end of the season and now.

Mets with a $377M payroll.

I'm guessing the Giants got cold feet. Rightly so. They stink, with or without him.

Yeah but they had a tentative agreement . When does Biden get involved and enforce it to make him play for the Giants ?

Truly amazing. We may never know the issue because of HIPPA.

This may help the White Sox unload Hendricks. Of course they will end up with another DH in Vientos, because the White Sox can never have too many DH playing on the field at once.

Saw a tweet that it's $384 million, and $111 million in just the luxury tax. Basically a $495 million payroll. That's more than the bottom 6 teams are spending combined. What they are paying in luxury tax is more than the payroll of the bottom 1/3 of the league.

The Oakland A's are basically a minor league team at this point. Time to lockout and demand a salary cap.

This is why Cohen played nicely before the last lockout. Now he doesn't give a fuck.

Hopefully this will motivate a couple of bad owners to sell in the next 3-4 years.

At this point, the Giants are totally and thoroughly fucked up. They have an old team, a lousy minor league system (they had an up and coming prospect they traded for Andrew McCutchen a few years ago, it was Brian Reynolds...), and an angry fan base. Nothing short of landing Shohei will appease them.

The Mets might have been better off re-signing deGrom instead of signing Correa. Think of what that rotation could have been.

The A's get a share of the luxury tax payouts for doing nothing. They aren't going to want to lock out.

The players need to realize that in the long run they really need a salary floor, even if that means accepting a salary cap.

The other thing is that you can't pay for individual or team performance in the current CBA. So you can't tell a guy "if you hit .300/.375/.475 for 500 PA I will give you a 30% bonus" or "if we win the World Series I will give you $20M." That is lunacy.

That's what really needs to happen. If you can't field a team that at least tries to win and is a reasonably successful business, you need to sell to some people who think they can. If that means moving the team, then the team moves. If the owners refuse to sell or compete, the league needs to contract the team. Of course, neither of those things are ever going to happen.

Yup.. I never wanted Ricketts .. you want an owner with deep pockets, balls and brain..Ricketts has none. Bezos on the other hand has deep pockets and big balls no brains.. both will win zero rings in the nextv5 years

Owners are threatening Cohen and admitting they've colluded to keep their payroll below $300M.

I started watching baseball in 1970. As a result, I have hated everything about the Mets except for Bartolo Colon and the amazing Howie Rose for the last 50 years. If Cohen's approach manages to get the other owners to fire Rob Manfred, I will openly root for the Mets.
