Good idea. Talking about how rough 1st base is can take a lot out of you.

Really good, but not exceptional IMO.

There have to be some exceptional third basemen, don't there? If he's not exceptional, who is? He's probably the second best guy defensively over there. Certainly the second best who could hit enough to keep the job everyday. I mean there are guys like Aurelio Rodriguez and Clete Boyer, but teams were always trying to replace them with someone who could hit and hit for power.

1. I don't think The Hall needs to make any efforts towards positional parity.
2. As others have pointed out, third base is not the same as an up the middle position and doesn't deserve the same offensive discount.
3. I grew up watching guys like Boggs, Brett, and Schmidt. I expect my Hall of Fame third basemen to put up numbers like them.

I think you have stated what I was trying to say in a much better way. When you grew up watching guys like Boggs, Brett, and Schmidt you clearly saw what a HOF 3rd baseman looked like. I just never saw Rolen and thought he was in the same league.

I suspect that has more to do with your age and who you consider "heroic" than with their respective performance.

Rolen should have been MVP of the 2006 World Series: Rolen hit in all 5 games, 3 multiple hit games, scored 5 runs, knocked in 2 more.

Tony LaRussa and Scott Rolen weren't on speaking terms that post-season/World Series; LaRussa and Rolen would stand/sit/spit at opposite ends of the dugout during the games.

How about you need at least 1 MVP or 1 Cy Young to get in the HOF?

Then Lee Smith and Ron Santo should get the boot.

I will throw in an exception for catcher, it's hard to win MVP as catcher. And two closers per decade gets in, that's it. Shouldn't be a big deal with the game moving to bullpen by committee.
