Aren't there really three plausible explanations for this:

1. Guy had a legitimate mispronunciation/blending of words to make it sound offensive.
2. Guy uses the word so much on the regular in professional settings that it just came out like any other word.
3. Guy woke up that morning and decided that would be the day he tried to slip that word into a live broadcast.

If it was #2 above I'd have to assume that he would have been fired a long time ago for something said not on the air.

Now we're down to #1 and #3. I guess the A's decided that #3 was the answer, which seems a bit hard to explain. This is different than the Brenneman thing where Brenneman was talking off air and the hot mic got him. Kuiper knew he was broadcasting.

It's probably the A's are cheap, but still, when your whole job is, ya know, talking, going hard R for whatever reason is a problem

Brenneman was intentionally using a slur and a producer wanted to fuck him. This guy was praising the Negro League Museum and made a mistake that neither he or his partner recognized. This is also a guy who has worked for this shitty organization for a very long time. They know what type of man he is. I'm fairly confident they know he isn't some racist. Firing him for fucking up a word is ridiculous.

There are sportscasters who have screwed up actual plays, scores, or names MANY times before. We've had teachers say worse. Politicians have said worse. Jobs were not lost in all instances. Nobody is perfect. Do you really think his job and career should be over with because he seemingly accidentally mis-spoke? Hawk Harrelson once said 'Sea Men' on the air. Should he have been fired for that?

Kuiper also said he had been to the Negro Leagues Museum a few times in the past. If it was really #2 in One Post's scenario above, why would he continue to visit that type of place?

He was hellbent on saying the word on air after 20 years. You can only hide your racism for so long. Something something subconscious.

The moral of the story: Don't go to museums. You may be fired for it.

I did not say that. I said he may or may not get fired. How could I give two answers that literally covers 100% of the available outcomes and you still remembered what I said incorrectly?

Nah. They probably weighed the social and economic backlash they'd experience for keeping him vs the social and economic costs of releasing him and rightly judged the former would far outweigh the latter. I'm not saying they should have released him, but the high social and economic costs of keeping him around just reflect how much has changed culturally over just the last 10-15 years. I don't think he's getting fired in, say, 2012.

So what was the point of apologizing?

He made a mistake. If you make a mistake, even if it wasn't intentional, you apologize. If I bump into you on the street while I'm posting on my phone I say sorry.

I think he would have been better "doubling down". And you shouldn't have to apologize for a simple speech mistake.

“I don’t know, but they did it. They’ve done it before and they did it tonight and they’ll do it again and when they do it—seems that only children weep.

Things would be much worse now for him if he said "I said it and I am not sorry I did it".

The A's overreacted but it's not like he is keeping his job by being defiant about it.

I wonder what kind of information was uncovered in the internal review. As previously mentioned, the guy had visited the museum several times...not something an Imperial Wizard would be likely to do.

I think you made a mistake. You thought you heard something you didn't. Probably due to your internalized racism. You owe Nas and Reader an apology.

What do you expect from Kramer? BRick is an honorary Lodge member, so we allow it.

Seriously, does anyone really think he was saying that word? It may have sort of sounded like it, but everyone must know that isn't what he said. So firing a guy after twenty years for what you think you heard. It's ridiculous.

Thats what makes the apology even more ridiculous. “I’m sorry you think I said some word”
