He is 1-15 this year. I don't think I've ever seen anyone go 1-15.
Imagine having 223 wins, and you pitch all year and add only 1 win to your total.

He started Game 1 this year, and today starting Game 162.

Anthony Young had back to back 2-14 and 1-16 records for the 1992/1993 Mets before coming to the Cubs for a couple of years.

I remember there was a bit of excitement around him when the cubs got him that the change of venue was what he needed and he had A+ stuff. Nope

I’d say he’s a hall of famer but I’m not going to look into it. I assume he’s been on a WS winner or two? At least one cy young?

Good enough for me, but baseball is weird.

He has one Cy Young (2009), but while he's pitched for World Series teams, he's never been on a winner. I'm not convinced he's one of the best pitchers of this generation, so I don't think I'd vote for him, but he's going to hang around on the ballot for the full 10 years if he doesn't get in.

What's funny is that before today, he was 1-15 in 26 starts, and he had a 0.8 WAR. As if to say his average replacement in the rotation would have started 26 times and had 0.2 wins?

He'll clear the threshold on the first ballot. Once that happens, his WAR will be high enough to keep him around. It's good for 25th all-time amongst starting pitchers.

If he's "fringy" there aren't going to be many starting pitchers in the Hall going forward. He's got a .590 winning percentage over 500+ starts and 3000 strikeouts.

What do you think it should take to make the Hall of Fame?

I think Verlander, Kershaw, and Scherzer all get in before he does. They've all pitched in bigger games and have similar or better numbers.

Yeah, all those guys are obviously in. But I'm not sure how many even like them there will be in the future. Blake Snell is going to have a Cy Young in both leagues and he's never been beyond the seventh inning. I think Greinke is a no-brainer. I would call Buehrle "fringy."

Post subject:  Re: Zack Greinke

speaking of HoF watch, Verlander ends 2023 at 257-141 (going 6-5 on the putrid Mets didn't help), pitched in 5 world series (won maybe 1 WS game tho himself), 3 Cy Young Awards, ROY, MVP...probably more of a 300 game watch than a HoF watch.

Verlander's getting into the HoF unless they stop admitting starting pitchers entirely, cuz no one's getting to 300 ever again. He's probably the last best shot at it tho. So he might Jamie Moyer it up and keep bouncing from team to team, picking up 4 wins here, 5 wins there until he gets to 300 regular season W's.

Verlander, Scherzer, Kershaw all 1st ballot, no doubt.

Greinke on fringe, probably in eventually. Wainwright further on fringe, probably out.

If you let guys like Baines, Rolen, Simmons in, might as well let Greinke in.

And also Steve Garvey. For decades Garvey HOF wasn't even a mention as it should not have been. but with those 3 good players in, he deserves to get in now.

I s'pose you're right. I mean, if Buehrle is fringe, Greinke is probably in within 2-3 years.

That's about right. How many times was Greinke one of top five pitchers in any given year? He's a guy who would ordinarily get in on a milestone basis, but hasn't hit the milestones. I think, for this era, you've got to base your candidacy on a seven year run of dominance more than anything else.

All that being said, in looking into all this, Kershaw has a career. 695 winning percentage. Run support does count for something.

Greinke was a dominant pitcher in the lesser league. He had one good season in the AL.

You think Kershaw has a near .700 winning percentage because of "run support"?
