Good for him. He's going to make that organization more than that.

Status check on CB’s level of respect for Ohtani?

I'm intrigued to see what precedential effect this will have on salaries going forward. Ohtani is obviously a unique player, but that may not stop Soto from demanding $720 million next offseason.

Per MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, Ohtani’s deal includes what one source called “unprecedented deferrals,” including the majority of his salary -- which was Ohtani’s idea. He wanted to mitigate the CBT and cash-flow burdens to let the Dodgers have the flexibility to be competitive.

There are also tax benefits because of the deferrals, the source told Feinsand, but they were “primarily about allowing the team to be successful on the field, because above all else, he wants to win.”

Sounds like your sources may not be correct. Hmmm...this is all very strange.

It was the same source that said drafting a WR top 10 was an absolute lock

Nice comeback for a statement that was never made. You truly are pathetic.

I could drive a truck through that "above all else" hole.

If he didn't blow his arm out the wound have been the start point for most teams. He left about $150M on the table because of his injury.

Not to quibble because you're right, but it's closer to $100M on the table.

I hear 'deferred' money. Are we talking Bobby Bonilla deferred, or contract back loaded deferred?

My guess is Bonilla but then the Dodgers will still use him for all kinds of marketing opportunities.

The contract has been in the works for over 2 years. Its why they didn't resign Seager or Turner

Supposedly Ohtani/CAA offered to defer about half of it, presumably to give the Dodgers the opportunity to pay the luxury tax with current cash flow.

There also have to be tax implications for Ohtani if he plans on moving back to Japan when he finishes playing, just not having to pay 10% California state income tax would be a big thing.

10 years of him as basically a league minimum player, so Dodgers can still add whoever they want to payroll to help him and avoid salary tax. They worry about the $68 million in 2034. With inflation, that's like a Happy Meal by then....

That seems odd. But I think the payroll tax is not based on cash payments but average over life of the deal.

I checked Cots. Stanton for instance is $25m per year for tax purposes despite his current salary of $32m.

MLB Trade Rumors is reporting that the deal is expected to be valued at $470M for luxury tax purposes, equally divided across then 10 years he will be under contract.

Of course, they will pay for the luxury tax with they money they make beyond revenue sharing in the Japanese market. One analyst estimated this past summer that the Angels were earning $25-30M/yr that way.

The last time that Japanese inflation exceeded 3% was 1980.

Ohtani doesn't care how much a beef at Portillos will cost in 2044.

The Dodgers are in punative territory as this will be its fourth year in the luxury tax regime. Maybe the deferral will get them below the line. This is a nice recap of the rules.

https://www.mlb.com/glossary/transactions/competitive-balance-tax#

They better hope this guy does not get hurt in like year three or four because this shaping up to be a very long term deal….

They don't have cap hits any more for Bauer, Kershaw, and JD Martinez. They are going to have some problems getting under the cap and still investing in pitching, which is why a Dylan Cease deal makes so much sense for them to go along with their young pre-arb starters such as Sheehan, Miller, and Pepiott.
