The Phillies signed slugger Ryan Howard to a five-year contract extension on Monday that will run through the 2016 season and guarantees him at least $125 million.

The deal, which includes a club option for a sixth year, will pay the first baseman $20 million for the 2012 and 2013 seasons and $25 million for each season from 2014-16. Howard's sixth-year option is worth $23 million and includes a $10 million buyout.

Howard's deal also includes awards bonuses and a limited no-trade clause, the Phillies said in announcing the deal.

The 30-year-old first baseman is off to a strong start in 2010, hitting .275 with three homers and 16 RBIs so far.

Currently at fifth place on the Phillies' all-time home run list at 225, the 30-year-old Howard has been a dominant force in the Phillies lineup since he won the National League Rookie of the Year award in 2005. He cemented his status as a big-time slugger in 2006, when he won the NL MVP award and set a single-season club record with 58 home runs.

He was named the MVP of the NL Championship Series for his role in the Phillies' pennant-clinching series last season, and he is the team's all-time leader in postseason RBIs with 27.

Since becoming an everyday player on July 1, 2005, Howard leads all Major League players in home runs (222) and RBIs (650).

Not sure if they will be able to re sign Werth.
If Ryan Howard is a $25mil player, what will Adrian Gonzalez be asking for? Pujols may be looking for $30mil

They have all the makings of a dynasty. If they stay healthy I don't see anyone in the NL who's going to be able to compete with them for the next few years.

Admittedly, I dont know a whole lot about baseball. I do know that if Howard deserves $25 million, Pujols deserves $35+ million, which is just outrageous.

Yeah there are a lot of Cardinal fans down here pretty nervous about this. But I have to think they find a way to sign him and I figure he will give them a discount too.

Howard is a great player, and while he isn't old, he isn't young either. There is a lot of risk in this move in that if they don't win a couple times and start selling off their veteran core, there will be a lot of money tied up in a potentially aging slugger. in 2012 when this extension starts, he will be 32 and they will still be on the hook for the $125 million for another 5 years.

The Phillies have tons of revenue streams apparently, they were able to add Halladay and extend Howard. They do have some limitations apparently, Cliff Lee was dealt from a team built to win now (albeit, for 3 pretty good prospects). They must be anticipating dumping Rollins at some point considering that retaining Utley is almost a no-brainer. Werth is as good as gone, Lidge will probably be gone, Polanco is old.

I'm starting to think Amaro out-thought himself on this one, with the belief that there would be bidding wars for Pujols, Fielder and Gonzalez that would set the market on power hitting first basemen in the $30+ million range. I have a feeling that at some point this is going to be a bad contract.
