If you have tickets to this weekend's Diamondbacks/Cubs' series at Wrigley Field, you may have noticed protesters outside the ballpark. They're protesting Arizona's controversial new immigration law, in which police there can stop and detain anyone who they feel are here illegally, and would be required to show proof of immigration status.

Yesterday, some 100 protesters held up signs outside the "Friendly Confines" urging Cub fans to boycott the game as a message to the team's owners & other Arizona businesses in protest of the state's new law. The protesters were scheduled to be at the ballpark again today, but the firestorm is far from over.

Democratic Congressman Jose Serrano of New York now wants Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig to take next year's All-Star Game away from Phoenix and the D-Backs' home Chase Field as a result of the controversial new law. An MLB spokesman says Selig has no comment on the issue and adds that if MLB moves the midsummer classic out of Phoenix next year, it could cost the local economy there over $40 million.

As for why the D-Backs have been singled out, it turns out Owner Ken Kendrick was a major backer of Republican support who promoted the bill, signed into law back in January by Arizona Governor Jan Brewer. A statement released by the team says while Kendrick supports GOP candidates, he doesn't necessarily support the new immigration law, likely to take effect within the next 90 days.
