They are amazing. My Cardinal fan friends have nothing but angst over this team and they do nothing but win.

Is there still a chance Wainwright comes back this season?

Not no chance according to Adam, but it would be foolish. I could see maybe if Siegriest and Rosenthal went down, but as it is Martinez, as good as he's been; may go to the pen. Matheny will almost certainly go with Lynn-Garcia-Lackey-Wacha. Even in the bullpen, Wainwright would have to build up some semblance of arm strength and I just don't se it happening. Would be a great narrative, though.

Thanks Apologist. Makes me feel better if the Cubs won't see him.

Even if Waino has no velocity, I remember him out of the pen in '06

So what happened to Martinez? Done for season?

Nvm, found it myself.

UPDATE: According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak just announced Martinez will miss the remainder of the season with a shoulder strain. Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com writes that no surgery will be needed, but it’s brutal news for the Cardinals.

He may, but they said he won't be a starter. They are going to use him in middle relief at most. Losing Martinez might hurt them in the long run, but they still have enough pitching to get them through a five game series. They may change their minds if they make it to the NLCS.

Piscotty and Bourjos collide in outfield in Pittsburgh in violent collision. Yikes.

Lucky if just that. He clearly looked like he was knocked out. Bourjos' shaking him and not reacting at all at first was scary, and a reminder it's just a game.

My sources are far from official, but Waino is texting that he is "okay". Seeing how cautious this regime is regarding injuries, Martinez is being shut down to protect his career; I'd be surprised to see Piscotty again this year.

Derrick Goold

@dgoold

If Wainwright reports to ballpark tomorrow with no issues after today's exertion he expects to be cleared for game. Could see him by Wed.

I feel like he could be, but I'm a "Let everyone in" guy. If they win another WS in his tenure, I think that would help his case greatly. He spent the first half of his career as a guy who couldn't hit, I would not be upset if he didn't get in.
In ten years or whenever he is eligible, the voter population will probably have changed a lot. Perhaps catcher defense will be more conventionally understood, or some advanced metrics will prop up his framing and pitch-calling prowess. I never thought they would have given Felix Hernandez the CY a few years ago, so who knows?

I can't really see how. He has the same numbers as Pierzynski and less of them. I realize he's considered a superior backstop, but I don't think that gets him in. I couldn't say he's better than a guy like Jim Sundberg or Bill Freehan. Those aren't Hall of Famers. But we're in an odd time. Will a starting pitcher ever get in again?

The catcher and huge part of the winning on two very different WS teams (07-11) is a big part of his case

Also 7 time all star, 6 time gold glover

He goes in

I just can't see it. Freehan made 11 All-Star teams and was in the top three in the MVP voting a couple times. He won four or five Gold Gloves too. If he's not in, I can't see Molina going in.

And Sundberg was like a Johnny Bench behind the plate. His offense is a little less, and he's no Hall of Famer, but that's the class I'd put Molina in.
