found a little taste of Harry in his prime on youtube. I could listen to that shit all day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJSZ8-6c9Ts

I liked Lloyd and Boudreau. Sad state of affairs we have today when people think Pat Hughes is a decent announcer.

I think his "sing-songy" delivery is totally a ripoff of that Dodger guy,Vin Scully.

Harry and Steve were the best. Stone, was in his prime, he knew all the other players and teams. He watched games at night instead of announcing one and he enjoyed being in the booth.

Cubs ownership realized the amazing value of having Harry broadcast games. Maybe that effect wouldnt be there today, but back in the days of ch 2,5,7,9, 11, 26, 32, 44 He was a major force.

Harry was still good in his first years with the Cubs. Toward the end, after the strokes, he was a shell of his former self. A caricature....

This is how I will remember him, Falstaff beer and Chicken Unlimited on 44.

One of the many monumentally stupid moves Reinsdorf has made as a white sox owner...but its the fans fault for losing interest and not Jerry's...and he has a poll to prove it.

Too bad they had to feature that idiotic "tradition" of celebrities/athletes singing.

I think Harry and Jimmy were better. Jimmy is a knowledgeable baseball lifer with more than a hint of crazy thrown in to keep you on the edge of your seat.

That was the radio on which I grew up. Think about how stacked that lineup was that Kevin Matthews was working the night shift. There will never be a station like that again. I sound like my dad when he told me they used to love listening to Wally Phillips in college.

Agreed. Stone approaches the viewer like he's a brain dead moron who has never seen a game before. Always did. It was exacerbated by Swirsky.

That's my issue with Hughes...but instead of the brain dead moron, he feels his main audience is the 80-yr old grandma.

I thought for a moment you didn't realize Jimmy had a TV show, but then I figured you meant he could've done an entire radio show as Jimmy. I'd be tickled shitless if they had Kev come do middays over at the Score.

Now that was Peak Radio. At the live shows they would do this slide show of Jim Shorts' life that was David Lynchian.

Remember when Jim Shorts had his own character? Was it Cecil? And then Cecil had a character? Theater of the absurd.

Kevin Matthews was so goddamn funny. Nice guy, too.

Cecil would tell Jimmy to shut up and Jimmy would respond "Cecil, please"

Jimmy had a wife named Wang, which was some woman who would call in and speak Chinese.

That's good, sucky!

Just to bring this full circle, Kevin's producer was none other than MITCH!

I heard Kevin was certifiably insane in those days. He insisted on having a separate mic for Jimmy and he attacked Maggie Brock as Jimmy. He had really gotten nutty at the end of his run. He became very right wing and only wanted to talk about hunting.

As a young person, I was assigned to go to the station offices to look through the records on political ad buys. They basically gave me free reign in their personnel files. I remember seeing Les' contract.

While I was doing my research, who should walk into the room but Kevin. He was a big, dopey looking guy.

Anybody watch? Saw it today and it's pretty good. According to Bob Costas, even Elvis Presley loved Harry. They rode around in a car drinking Budweiser and talking baseball.
