 Im not referring to THAT argument. (although Im sure the horrible offense hasnt helped)

But youve got 4-5 Samardzija losing them the division, while ol Sonny is way worse (according to how you view things)

Sonny Gray isn't sharp. Samardzija has never really been sharp over an extended period.

Beane had the best team in baseball and he fucked it up. That's a fact. Sometimes you just have to look at your team that is playing .630 baseball and believe in it rather than bringing in guys from losing teams to "help".

Yeah, so saying Samardzija is losing them the division is just you wanting to rip Samardzija. The offense and Gray are both much bigger reasons.

The Cespedes trade is the one that ruined it though and I wouldnt say Lester was coming from a losing team.

Huh? The Red Sox are one of the worst teams in baseball.

And the difference between Gray and Samardzija is that Gray is one of their core pieces. They were going to have him regardless. They went out and mortgaged their future to get guys who have done worse than the guys they replaced. There's no way to spin good out of it. Those trades have been a disaster for Oakland.

Beane abandoned his philosophy. And whatever it is you do, you have to have a philosophy you believe in. If you don't, you're just a goof running around willy-nilly. Or somebody trying to get lucky like the guy throwing hundreds on the yo at the craps table.

I thought you were saying the A's shouldnt go out and get losing players. I wouldnt consider Lester a loser.

Agreed. Sounds like Beane lost them the division. Samardzija is who he's always been right?

As far as philisophy, is it understandable that he wanted to try something new after so many playoff failures?

No. Lester is a winning pitcher. But I don't really consider him an "ace" type guy. He's like a Buehrle. You can put him in your rotation and know that you are going to win more of his starts than you lose.

Yeah. He's exactly who he has always been. And in his case it seems that looking at his W/L record defines that better than some other numbers that may lead one to think he's better than he actually is. I understand why people pay big money for guys like Edwin Jackson and Javy Vazquez and Jeff Samardzija. You're always going to think they can do better than they have.

 I don't really hate Samardzija. I just think he's one of those guys that doesn't really know how to pitch a game. I'm sure he'll have a great year at some point in his career. But I thought the same thing about Jackson and that looks less and less likely all the time. Though it wouldn't shock me if the Cubs dumped him and he ended up in New York at some point and you looked up one day and said, "Whoa! Edwin Jackson is 10-1 with a 2.35 ERA for the Yankees???"

The thing is, those guys are still like #3's on most teams and people talk like they're bums

Well, they're frustrating when they're on your team. It's a little easier to see their value when they go somewhere else. But it's natural for people to put too much emphasis on their own personal experiences. We could carry that line of thought right into that race thread that I'm doing my best to stay out of.

I hope Abreu takes this pretender deep 3 times before he's yanked.

He is exactly what he's always been and will always be...4 era n bottom of a rotation guy...unless you want to suck, pay him 100 million to be your #2 .

Rick Telander reads the board. On the CSN live show, he just parroted JORR's thoughts exactly about Billy Beane fucking the A's up by abandoning what got him there.

Yeah, and some goof who just crawled out of AA will probably pitch better in the same game vs. a better offense.

10Ks, 4 hits, no walks, and no runs in 8 innings and the pen gives up 6 in the 9th. Didn't lose though!

Well here are the final totals from his Oakland season. Lat night ( in one of those "big" games he couldn't wait to pitch in with a contending team. A game that would've clinched the wildcard for Oakland ) he took it on the chin against Texas. 7innings, 8 hits, 5 runs, 5 earned runs, 0 walks, 9 strikeouts , 2 HR allowed. Ended his Oakland season at 5-6. 3.14 ERA , WHIP of .931. Again, every stat would indicate that he pitched really great, except wins.

I'm glad we now all agree that wins is a bad stat to judge a pitcher on.

Yeah im sure Billy Beane will have preferred the year Samardzija had for him if they miss the playoffs over say 7-3 , 4.1 ERA, 1.3 WHIP and making the playoffs .
