How smart do Theo and Jed look?

Arrieta is scary. He's dependent on his slider.

Eh, it is more of a cutter than a slider, no? Should help a little.

The cutter is no different than the slider.

Except for the grip, speed, and break.

IMU, unfortunately the cutter is just as bad of a pitch as the slider.

It's worse because it's a lot easier to throw incorrectly. I don't think an amateur pitcher should ever throw a cutter. It's not as bad as a splitter but still way too much risk of injury.

Hmm.

Well, Arrieta is God so he won't get injured.

David Riske used to pitch here and threw the cutter and it looked like a frisbee at times, but they talked how it was similar to the slider.

I know it is similar, but I thought since it is more of a fastball, you'd alleviate some of the breaking ball concerns. I could never throw a good slider. I was no great pitcher by any stretch, but my two seam actually moved in on a right-hander. That and a curveball were the only two pitches I could throw. (I can not locate a four seamer) My change-up traveled 55 feet.

So his elbow should blow up by the end of April. :D

You know that one porn star that molded and sells her vagina as a sex toy? Arrieta is going to do that for his elbow, so that other pitchers may graft it on their arm and perform as well as Arrieta does.

I'd bet on his shoulder giving out before his elbow due to his across his body delivery. That delivery puts a lot of stress on the shoulder.

Dodgers RHP Brandon McCarthy has been diagnosed with a torn right ulnar collateral ligament and will require Tommy John surgery.

He signed a 4yr/$48M deal with this past off season. Ouch Babe.

I read Diamondbacks told McCarthy no cutters. He didn't pitch well. Goes to the Yankees and is allowed to throw cutters...does really well!

Well, now we see why the Diamondbacks said no cutters.

I feel bad for McCarthy as he's an intelligent engaging guy. But I don't feel sorry for the Dodgers one bit. McCarthy's history of health issues were well documented.

Masahiro Tanaka will be placed on the disabled list with a small strain in his right forearm and tendinitis in his right wrist.

So he has another injury while trying to pitch thru a torn UCL. Who could have ever seen this coming. I don't understand what they are doing. Just cut your (massive) losses and fix the damn thing. He's expect to miss about a month.

So what's with Aiken's surgery? Was it done by a well-known guy? Were there other "issues"? I wouldn't mind Sox drafting him if medical looks OK.

It was done by Dr. David Altcheck at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. He's not Dr Andrews but I'm sure he's one of the best.

Aiken is way too risky so I don't think the Sox go anywhere near him. They don't have a 2nd or 3rd round pick so they have to hit with that 1st rounder. I expect them to go with a safe college player like Funk, Happ or Newman!. I think Aiken will go to a team who has multiple picks at the top like the Yankees, Rockies or Braves.

Sox still need stars, not replacement players. You mentioned some high schooler that was compared to Ted Williams. I'd be innerested in some of that.

It's not like those guys are bad. Funk was up to 98 in his last start and Happ can really hit. Tucker would be good too. He has a real strong commitment to Florida so there are still questions about his signability. You think if he goes in the top 10 he would sign but it has happened before.

Jarrod Parker has an an avulsion fracture of the medial epicondyle.

He broke a bone in his elbow while rehabbing his second Tommy John surgery. The bone above the ligament broke but the good news is the ligament is still intact so he probably won't need a third Tommy John surgery. Of course the bad news is his elbow is a mangled pile of meat.

The Royals placed LHP Jason Vargas on the 15-day disabled list with a torn left ulnar collateral ligament. Vargas had been trying to pitch through a flexor tendon issue and then he blew out his UCL during his first start back from the DL.

Smrt move.

Here's the video of Smoltz talking about Tommy John surgery. Powerful stuff. I hope this will help educate some parents out there to have more say in how their kids are being used and abused by people who don't always have the kids best interests in mind.
