I don't see where anyone said "the right way" unless I missed it. I might have. And the context to a lot of those comments was that they were Cubs fans criticizing the past ways in which the Cubs tried to win, not the current ways in which other teams try to win.

You have it backwards. There was recognition that purposely losing for years was the wrong way.

Winning is the ultimate goal and height of excitement for any fan base. But I derive greater pleasure from watching younger players develop before our eyes like Rizzo and Arrieta vs. known quantities like Lester. You paid Lester to be great and expect such. You traded for Rizzo and Arrieta when they weren't great, and there is a deeper satisfaction (for me) from watching them turn into solid players.
