He broke Jung's leg by going straight legged into his knee. When is his suspension being announced?

Got it.
Was the base contacted by the runner?

Not even close. Coghlin's slide wasn't "late" and it was at the bag. The covering fielder should never go in front of the bag for risk of injury.

That's what you're hanging on to? Shouldn't the leg into the knee be the concern?

Keyser you are an idiot. You only bring that up because you hate the Cubs and love to post anything negative about them you can.

There is no way in the world Coghlans slide was worse than Utleys. The pic spanky posted clearly shows that.

Get back to sucking Robins cock

Middle infielders are taught to GTF out of the way on the turn......he stepped straight at first, he's in front of the bag, straight in the way.
Jung even said that day it wasn't dirty. This is kinda silly.

He's right on 3 of the 4.

It absolutely was near the bag.

Also one other thing I've not heard much about: new sheriff in town (Manfred).
Maybe that plays a role in this punishment?

You mean the leg that is about 4" off the ground?

Did the Twins have an Asian infielder who broke is leg too by basically doing the same thing? You should be taught to use the bag like a blocker almost. You step into the baseline and that is what you risk happening. The picture Spany posted and the Utley slide are not even close to the same thing.

I know. Utley was nearer the base than Coughlin.

I agree with the suspension but think the ump(s) should be suspended for missing that as well. Had it been the final game-winning play, would MLB have reversed the Dodgers win?

Have you ever seen an umpire grant a double play that wasn't completed due to a takeout slide?

Yes, I think it happens a few times per year. Unless I'm thinking of my kid's travel team. :)

Hawk probably has. And of course it went against the Sox.

here's a question for oldsters like JORR. didn't SS used to jump up in the air instead of sliding past the base to make the throw? nobody gets hurt if you jump up. maybe there's a reason they used to do that.

I think there was more leeway on the neighborhood play.

Interesting.

The "retaliation" thing is one of the dumbest parts of baseball, though. The players think they should throw at him? Big deal... you hit a guy in the ass with a fastball. Oh, and you screw yourself by putting a guy on base. If you're gonna retaliate, just go beat the dude's ass, Nolan Ryan/Robin Ventura-style. Just get a double, step off second and jack him right in the face. That would be retaliation. It would be equally stupid, but at least it would cause pain and would be fun to watch.

baseball is baseball. I don't see why people who don't actually like baseball feel the need to complain about it. (not talking about you leash)

the fucking game has worked out OK for 120 years and the past five years they change rules every five minutes. they are gonna fuck it up.

hey, a .230 hitting SS broke a bone. OMG!!

Part of the problem is that there are fans like li'l danny bernstein out there and their sensibilities are offended by any type of rough play (except big black studs scrambling each other's brains on Sunday afternoons in the fall). The players have always handled this type of thing themselves. Nellie Fox knew a runner might be coming in on him spikes high to break up a double play, but that runner also knew he might catch one of Nellie's knees in the nose or one of Nellie's spikes on his balls. Things kind of took care of themselves.

That was an interesting read.

Thanks for providing the link.

I agree with the "Legal but dirty" contingent.

1) he slid out of the basepath
2) he never touched the bag

He was out for these 2 reasons alone
3) yes....he intentionally tried to take out the defensive player....dirty play.

I'm more angry that the officials missed out on 1 and 2.

"Take-out slides" and punishment need to be dealt with, but not at the end of the season during the playoffs. It's a topic and a ruling to come out of the winter meetings and acted on at the start of the season.
