I'm ignorant on the rules here, and listening to Dusty Baker explain it only made it slightly worse.

Was that a legal slide?

Even if it was technically legal, was it... I don't know... reasonable, for lack of a better term?

I think it was horseshit. Anything goes in front of the base...in front of the play. Going that far out of the way and past the base is busch.

I agree. I mean if that's legal, just let the runner tackle the guy. Would be safer and more fun to watch.

If you can no longer have collisions at home plate then plays like this should not be allowed. The guys slide did not even start til he got to the bag.

The Cards did this to the Cubs the last time they played because their assholes were sore about something. It was Yadi and someone else but they damn near started their slide at the base and ended up in the SS area. They didn't stray to the side as much as they just went way way past the base.

I didnt see it but I understand what youre saying and I agree. The catcher has all kind of gesr on. If you cant crush him, why should you be able to crush anyone else?

At least in those now banned collisions the catcher could at least prepare for impact. Some of these slides are so far off the bag that you are taking out the plant leg of a guy who is not even looking at you.

Also, this is exactly why the "neighborhood play" exists.

My bigger issue is ruling him safe after the play. He never touched the base nor tried to.

He made the right play. He was still in reach of the bag. The end result was awful but he did the right thing.

Looked like Utley took a shot to the head. I doubt he was trying to break the guys leg with his head.

Agreed. His head and neck are probably a little sore this morning. It's playoff baseball and the guy was just trying to break up a double play. He helped his team tie the game because of his efforts.

I recall during the regular season in a Cub game that there was a play where a second baseman did not touch the bag in a double play situation and the play was deemed not reviewable because it was a "neighborhood play" and those type of plays could not be reviewed and overturned. This was according to Kasper.

I did not watch the game yesterday, did anyone mention this?

I posted at least 10 times here that take out slides and the area play at 2nd base are complete bullshit and need to be removed. It adds nothing to the game but injuries. Nobody comes to see the 2nd baseman catch the ball in the outfield grass on a double play while some runner is also sliding into the outfield to get him. Keep it.

As for the play itself, if you never even bother to touch the bag, yeah it's a dirty play.

The Cubs broke a guys leg doing the same thing in the regular season, it's nothing special about playoff baseball.

It was not considered a neighborhood play due to the fact it was a bad throw to second.

well if you wanna term any slide that only exists to take out the guy turning the DP a "dirty slide" then yes, it was a "dirty slide"

however, given the situation going on (if the mets escape the 7th inning up 2-1 i got them winning the game and the series, cuz no way the dodgers come back from down 0-2 in a five gamer already having shot their kershaw/greinke wad) i dont think you can blame utley, and a fractured fibula (....i think?) obviously exacerbates the situation, but given that i personally believe the dodgers' playoff lives were on the line, man, you gotta go and do that.

put it this way, if he doesnt take out tejada in anything short of a spikes up to the junk or "intent to cause bodily harm" fashion you know he's getting MAD shit from doyers nation. i dont think he meant to injure tejada, but i do think he was gonna do whatever it took to make sure that tying run got in and like someone said b4 me.... that's playoff/baseball; love it or leave it!

I disagree. We shouldn't be making the game easier for pitchers and defenses. As long as you have a shot at touching 2nd base it should be legal.

Garbage play, garbage player. An officiating clusterfuck, too. All in all, not a banner evening for MLB.

There's no reason to risk player's careers to make the game easier for pitchers and defense. If you want to see people get blown up there's plenty of sports options, baseball doesn't need it. If you don't actually bother to touch 2nd base on your "slide" it's not a baseball play anymore.

He made a winning play. He wasn't trying to hurt the guy and was in reach of 2nd base. He banged his head pretty good too.

It wasn't a dirty play. He could have touched 2nd on that play too. The result is unfortunate but injuries happen in sports.

If Utley was just making a "smart" play, then the rule needs to be changed. Going full blast into a guy with no intention of even trying for the bag ruins the spirit of the game for me. Why don't we just allow guys running to first to tackle the first baseman when he's trying to catch the throw?

The rule is in there, they don't enforce it.
