Hm, I guess it's Holmgren. And as I was saying about the Flyers' quaint, almost Wirtzian loyalty:

https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/31- ... rena-deal/
Quote:
1. Whatever disagreements that took place between Ron Hextall and Paul Holmgren, the former lost his job for one reason: his position was weakened by sitting second-last in the Eastern Conference. Hextall was extremely loyal to Dave Hakstol, the team’s head coach. Many other GMs wouldn’t have held back the wolves, and there is no doubt some of those pushing him were internal.

But, Ed Snider’s Flyers were built on loyalty to those who represented the logo, and decisions to remove long-time employees like amateur scout Neil Little (who left in 2015) and assistant coach Joe Mullen (2017) caused fissures.

Of course, Holmgren himself is a Flyers-logo loyalty hire.

Philly has built a fantastic young group of prospects both in the NHL and in the system. Seems like a coaching change was needed before the GM.

Well, he did hire the current coach, yes?

After reading an article about Hextall it made me wish the Hawks had him as GM.

They should have traded him back to us over the summer after his contract got his general manager fired.

How come? Are you are a fan of Bowman?

The Athletic article and several national forum threads I read portrayed Hextall as a patient GM who drafted very well and fixed Holmgren's salary cap mess over the last couple seasons. It is speculated that he was fired since ownership and Holmgren wanted him to trade young assets to help the current team and Hextall refused. Quite a few Philly fans were not happy with the move and said that Holmgren was the one who should be let go. I am not going to pretend to know much about the Flyers and Hextall but the general consensus from what I read was that he did a good job. And it seemed that the biggest problem with the team this season is the goalie and not the coaching.

I dunno, seems like Flyers fans hate their coach, but Flyers fans hate everyone.

No....not a fan of Bowman. He deserved to be fired more than Q. I basically looked at Philly's performance since 2010 and have not seen anything that screamed they're ascending with young studs. I'm no NHL expert, so I may be wrong and Hextall just might be a better option.

What I do know is Toews and Seabrook take up 22% of the salary cap. That doesn't even address the wild card that is now Crawford and the holes at defense. I think we have 3 more years to pay for those cups we enjoyed. I cannot imagine any GM being able to clean up this mess.

The Flyers have never been a great developmental franchise because they were always in go-for-it mode under Snider. Even after the 04-05 lockout forced them to park Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, and Patrick Sharp on the Phantoms for a year and see that they shouldn't immediately be flipped for more urgent help, they still, to our lasting benefit, did that with Sharp. And for whatever reason, they destroy every goalie they touch.

Fuck Colorado. From the girlfriend-abusing goalie to the red-ass captain. Too ginger beardy as well.

So Steen lays a beautiful, open-ice hit on Mackinnon and then Johnson elbows Steen knocking him out for the game. St Louis is understandably upset and yet Landeskog is one of the main ones running around all pissed off. I never have like Landeskog or Mackinnon. Glad they lost in OT.

The Avs have been ass-wearying for years going back to when they had Duchene and treated every goal against the Hawks like they won the Cup.

Philly seems like a good place for Q to be. Wish him well

Love the thought of the Hawks trading Crawford and/or Keith for some of Philly’s prospects. Farabee would be a nice get.

Team USA juniors beat those dirty Russians 2-1 in the semifinals. They'll play the winner of Swiss/Finland on Saturday for the gold.

Just reading some things yesterday and after yesterday's game, one of the best goalies in the last couple years, is Lundqvist done or does he just need a new team.

He got blasted last Wednesday and said he needed rest, gets a game off and then the Coyotes blasted him yesterday.

He's almost done but a change of scenery could give him one last jump. Thing is, it's hard to see him leaving New York. Would the Rags dare to trade him to the Islanders?

Why would they want him? Lehner is off the sauce and playing great. He was a highly touted prospect and he might just be their starter for the next half dozen years.

2 more seasons at 8.5 M for Lundy is going to be tough to move. They'll have to retain a lot or take back some bad money AND Lundy would have to approve the deal. The Rangers do have an elite prospect in Shestyorkin on the way. A lot of people think he is the best goalie not in the NHL.

If you trust Lehner and Greiss to hold up down the stretch, you're more trusting than I am. I don't know that Lundqvist is the answer, but I feel like they need some veteran to come in and shore up there. It would be an amazing story if they made the playoffs.

I don't trust Lundqvist. His game has been trending downwards for the last 3 years and he is 36 and he has 2 more years at 8.5 M left on his deal after this season. The hard thing about trading goalies midseason is that teams that need a #1 goalie are rarely in a playoff position. Carolina is about the only team that makes sense.

Schmaltz is out for the year with a knee injury. Next year the Coyotes will be good, though.

Not surprising, but the Leaf may be looking at cap hell even before their prime:
