Best gyros I've had lately are from Scooters in Lake Bluff...sliced nice and thin and finished on the flat top...

Dengeos always seem mushy to me.

Kostas at Hicks and Dundee makes a pretty good one.

aren't they all pretty much the same ?

(not really joking here)

i mean it's not like these places are making homemade gyros, just throw the damn meat cone on the spit thing and let it warm up. i thought it was pretty much Kronos and that's it

Some of the places have Grecian Delight...

It's really about how they finish them.

I thought Scooters was marinated in Jack Daniels.

Jack Daniels is too rich for his blood...more like marinated in Ol' Grandad...

Gyros are all pretty similar...but some places are a little better than others. Dengeo's and Gemato's are two of my favorites...but you can find decent ones at most greasy spoons....or "greek diners."

Surprisingly, Arby's gyros is terrible. And unsurprisingly, not even made of lamb.

It's just called the Smoke House, they aren't smoking the meat. They use Grecian Delight gyro meat, cooked on the spit. They give the pitas a quick deep fry, and the fries are always fresh. Everything is good. Dogs, burgers, whatever.

You like Arby's. Pop is not for children, but the Simpson's is.

I think you live in some sort of Bizarro World.

Not lunch, but I bought and cut up a big ass watermelon yesterday. I've eaten about half of it already.

Finally tried Naf Naf for the first time the other day for lunch. Have been a huge fan of Pita Inn for over 23 years and have always been hesitant to try other middle eastern fare as none of them are ever up to snuff with Pita Inn, even the fancy places I've been to.

Anyway, first thing I noticed was the limited menu. Only 3 items, Chicken and beef shwarma and falafil. No kabobs, no keftka etc.

Settled on the chicken shwarma. Unlike Pita Inn, Naf Naf dresses its sandwiches Israeli style which means you get hummus and salad inside the pita. Went with teh hummus after trying the baba ganoush which wasn't very good, way too smokey.

loaded it up with the toppings and got a side of house chips (called fries there for some reason).

sandwich was very good, one of the better chicken shwarmas I've had in Chicago. Tahini sauce was good, not nearly as good as Pita Inns, but that's the gold standard. I would still say it was better than most of the tahini's you find at pita places. Chips were nothing special, would skip next time.

Overall would definitely go back if I was near one and there was no Pita Inn nearby.

shakes - there are two types of Naf Naf.

The three original locations offer a full menu. The rest of the locations offer a "fast casual" style of choices based around shawarma and falafel. I believe the three originals are the Naperville location off of Freedom / Diehl, the Aurora location on 59, and the Niles location.

For me, fast casual Naf Naf is a rip off compared to Cosi or Roti.

Pita Inn is in it's own tier for value.

Rammy's in Wheeling. Italian beef, provolone, garlic spread.

Glorious.

Some of the best tasting brats I've had look like gray pieces of crap.

Taste of food is not always related to the look of food.
