  They can't get anything right. How are you going to do an origin story based on Wizard and Glass with a 44 year old actor? He was a 15 year old in W&G... these fucking guys.

Maybe he will be the father. If that's the case he better never forget the face of his father.

Or... he's probably in it as Roland, who has flashbacks to his youth.

Let's all calm down folks.

Interesting.

King rarely -- if ever -- writes his novels with the large screen in mind. With the possible exception of The Green Mile, most of his books are complex from a literary sense due to flashbacks, sub-conscious parenthetical character thoughts and scale of story. This is largely way many adaptations of his books are complete flops.

However, when done well -- Shawshank, Green Mile, Hearts in Atlantis, Misery, and perhaps the upcoming IT reboot -- some adaptations are all-timers.

Going to the Thursday showing of The Dark Tower. My hopes are high.

This will not be a straight adaptation based on what is being said but an extension from the books. Honestly, I don't think they could do an adaptation of the books because 5, 6, & 7 get weird. Unless they condense those three, eliminate the weirdness and maybe change the ending.

They are doing a mini-series with Elba after the movie which will be where they dive into the books themselves. Not sure if McConaughey has signed on yet. In the mini series they will feature the supporting characters not seen in this movie, but were prominently displayed in the books.

So basically they are doing the sequel first, and then the actual story next. If I remember correctly, they may come back and do another movie after the mini series if everything is well received.

I'm in a win win here, I'm excited for Friday. Either I'm wrong and I get a great movie or I'm right and can spike the football all over this thread.

Apparently King liked the advanced screening he received ahead of the premier. Told the filmmakers they "did not forget the faces of their fathers."

Variety review was pretty good.

Others I've seen have been horrid.

the dead giveaway is the release date, and the lack of marketing.

remember, this is the same weekend last year that "suicide squad" was released.

Yes, Suicide Squad received horrible reviews, but it made $746 million world wide. I will always contend it was a really good half a movie. Up until that ridiculous introduction for Katana.

I don't have a good feeling about DT reaching $700 million.

this is the sleeper season of the summer. it's a gamble to release something as niche as "the dark tower". maybe 15-20 years ago it would've been hotter as the series was still relevant in modern literature.

i think it'll be a bomb mostly; but i wasn't talking about box office when i mentioned "suicide squad"--just reviews. and "suicide squad" had a built-in box office ready.

the year before, it was "fantastic four" that was released.

in 2011, it was "conan".

Dark Tower doesn't have a built in audience?

I'm fairly certain if this summer wasn't so loaded with quality releases nearly every Friday DT would have premiered in June or July.

It's been a really strong summer movie schedule, and I give kudos to Sony (just this one time) for realizing their product wasn't as good as the other films being released this summer. DT could make a decent haul the next 2 weeks as I don't know how much this version of white america will be rushing to see Detroit.

I know you weren't talking about box office with SS, but that high of a return indicates a good amount of people enjoyed it outside of critics. You know all this tho WZ. Idk why I'm saying it. Sorry!

i don't think it has a built-in box office that can carry it over its budget. but, if it makes $40-50 its first weekend, it has a chance at being a success. i see it making between $15-18. last week's winner was "Dunkirk" and it clocked in at $26. "the emoji movie", which debuted last week, only got $24 million. and that's a kid's movie. those are almost always sure-things.

i think "the dark tower" is going to suffer from "too-late" syndrome. it doesn't seem to have much relevance in pop culture; and even for king fans, i'm not sure this is cranking the dial the way that "It" will in september (which is also a dead month for box office).

Going tonight and have low expectations.

All the back-and-forth among movie studios and script rewrites, along with Goldsmith's tendency to be a "Hollywood Hack", is teeing this up to be a dud. However, I still have faith that the sci-fi and fantasy elements will allow it to perform better overseas. That's really our only hope if we are to see anything additional.

Reading some of the reviews it seems like there are good pieces in here but it's so muddled and scattered that it almost makes no sense, especially with the 90 minute run time.

I'm just saying what the reviews are.

Here's the thoughts from a person who went and had a screening in Bangor with Stephen King.

Late to the party thanks to travel woes but as I'm sure you've heard by now, #TheDarkTower is a bit of a shit show. It has the distinct flavor of too many cooks, or more likely, businessmen in chef hats. That said I don't totally hate it. It's a mess and a massive waste of potential but there is some fun to be had. Idris Elba is a fantastic Gunslinger and his charm is a force of magic that almost makes you forget the mess at times. His fish out of water scenes steal the movie. Speaking of magicks, as a Magic Mike diehard I'm so sad to report that I just hate what McConaughey did with the Man in Black. It's predictable, boring and goofy. And never once scary. Two other random complaints: the movie looks wildly low-budget at times (there's a simple makeup moment that's honestly baffling), And it's horrible to the female characters in a lazy way that makes me snooze. Bottom line, there's promise but not enough payoff. Feels like dress rehearsal for a show that's nowhere near ready for the curtain to lift. And I would desperately would love to see Idris' Roland in a better production.

Disappointing the magic mike fan didn't get enough almost nude scenes of the all right, all right, all right guy, but yeah, after that article about the production mess the too many cooks reference make sense.

Hopefully, they do get to make that mini series with Elba like is currently planned.

Why wouldn't they throw a good budget at this, and grab a stronger director? (Edit: Oh yeah, it's Sony)

Baffling.

Also interesting to read that the reviewer wanted the Man in Black to be more scary. I've never viewed that character as being horror, but rather evil incarnate with goofy tendencies (similar to the Joker).

If you want horror, see: Pennywise.

Agreed. Flagg was never true horror. The Joker comparison is solid. While not as silly, he's just insane with a truly morbid sense of humor. Two scenes that really encapsulate his character for me are his scene with the Tick Tock Man at the end of Wastelands and when he flips out on Nadine in The Stand. His demise was a huge FU to fans as well. He deserved better.

It's just a little messy direction. It's still good. It's still good....

It's just a little hackneyed writing. It's still good. It's still good....

It's just a little plot nonsense. It's still good. It's still good....

A movie that's a sequel to books?? If I went to see a sequel that didn't have a movie before it, I'd say "Yo Goober, wheres the original?" You don't win friends with sequels.

You dont win friends with sequels, you dont win friends with sequels.

I'm just working for the Crimson King, keeping a little gold in my pocket. That's what I love about these Outer Arc girls, I keep getting older and they stay the same age.
