Do it! He won't be great when they're making a World Series push and he may be 85 years old.

Trade him. He’ll be old and bad when/if this team is ever good. Papa Ricker can hold the young guys hands next year.

They can be decent next year and playoff caliber by 2019. Getting rid of Abreu would make that much much more difficult.

I guess it depends on if Rick Hahn can fleece yet another team or not.

Yep.

If you can command a large package ( :bounce: ) for him, then do it.

I have been saying no b/c I don't think they will get a great return and he does provide ample entertainment value to fans.

That's a good point, seriously.

When he starts to decline in 18 and even moreso when he starts getting breaking down in '19 you'll be glad you traded him.

I guess he's getting older. Maybe they can get Sale back.

Can anybody tell me what team with a realistic shot of winning their division in 2018 actually needs Abreu?

There will be a much market for him in July amongst the 8-10 teams fighting for the two wild card spots in each league. Texas and Seattle come to mind.

Didn't think this would happen, but there is serious smoke out there today. If anything, I've learned to have faith in Hahn. Think a move with Stanton is happening real soon, and he's floating Boston out there now, waiting for the feeding frenzy that will ensue after Stanton. Think his play is hoping Colorado and/or St. Louis lose out on Stanton, Martinez, and Hosmer, then he can swoop in.

I do not think the Sox should be actively looking to move Abreu, but if some team comes along and knocks your "sox" off with a trade offer, go ahead and pull the trigger.

What do you lose with Abreu?

10 homers?

1B who hit 25 homeruns can be found very easily.

Of course you trade him. That's a no brainer. Just try to get 3 teams to bid for him so you get the best haul. If you think the best bidding war will come at the all star break, then wait. But then you risk him sucking or getting hurt.

So I expect him to be traded this winter.

Plus, he's probably 2 or 3 years older then his listed age. Always add at least 2 years to a Cuban player.

Once you trade him, you could put Garcia at first when it's time for the OF kids to come up.

That's great. Abreu had a 900 OPS, hit over .300, and had 33hrs last season. Guys like that don't grow on trees.

Keyser wants to trade him straight up for the Boston version of Jason Heyward. Great defense with little offense. "JBJ" is also a free ajent at the end of this season. Here is just another in the long line of dumb thoughts from Keyser. Of Course, LTG isn't around to see this absurd idea.

Plus, another aspect of trading Abreu is saving the 12 million or so for this year. You pocket that, tell Jerry we can use it latter.

If they trade Abreu, the Sox are probably gonna have the lowest pay roll in baseball. What, maybe 50 or 60 million? Nobody on this team is making anything.

And you'll still get your 22k in attendence with or without Abreu. Especially when the kids start coming up.

Yeah, see. He doesn't work like that. It's some kind of tax avoidance scam he runs. They never really make or lose money. Maybe Denis can explain.

Offer him to the Cubs to see if they want an upgrade at 1B

He's kind of expensive for Iowa.

I guess I agree with RPB because of the age thing, but he's been pretty damn consistent. (Abreu, not RPB, who is wildly inconsistent.) He had a near-great year last year, despite the limited number of walks.

I just can't handle another year or two of an infield full of Matt Davidsons.

What are they realistically going to get for him? He had a great offensive season, but is a 1B with a pretty healthy contract.

What is the type of prospect they can get - a top 100? Not even close? A group of lower level (two or three of a team's 20 to 30th best prospects)?

It sure sounds like it is a matter of if whether than then. Sox are a willing trader and will move him when someone meets their price, which is likely to happen with so many teams involved. It's like being a store and welcoming in customers. This is similar to Quintana. Sale was a little different as everyone was willing to meet the price and it was just a matter of choosing what they liked best. Eaton was like someone walking up to your front door and saying they want to buy your house when it is not on the market.

Rumors are the Sox asked for Devers or Benintendi and talks shut down. You have to move him if that is the quality of the return. I would go so far as to sweeten the pot if either of those guys could be had.

If you could put Benintendi in CF, Avi in RF then I would certainly think about quickening the pace of Jimenez up to MLB if he kills it in AA for half a year. That is a good OF.
