Sources: #Packers GM Ted Thompson is expected to transition into a new role within the organization. The team will begin a search for a new GM. Bombshell.

Interesting.

Not a fan of the “he’s fired but still works for the front office in a new role” move.

He's in charge of season ticket sales next year.

Exactly. Hopefully this works out somewhat better.

Why not fire McCarthy too though? Only reason I can think of is Rodgers told them not to. I can’t really understand how else he would still have a job.

They've had their eye on Phil Emery for years now. Just waiting for the right time.

Well deserved since he's going to be at fault when Rodgers has to go to Cleveland.

Hopefully the new guy can find a good RB. I hear it’s the easiest position to fill but they haven’t had a good since Ahman Green.

I don't think Bernie Lomax has done shit since his stroke a few years ago. He has like 1 or 2 times he speaks to the media the entire year and aside from that no one knows what the hell he has been responsible for. He has an entire GM team. Ball is the money man, Wolf is college scouting and gutenkust is pro personnel.

Does this open the position for Ron Wolf's kid?

If he doesn't make it to the SB he's done, A.R. is too damn good to be wasted by this boob, I don't care how fine his daughter is.

Then they better get an GM quick otherwise they are going to be way behind in hiring a coach.

They’re going to promote Wolf and he will sign Free Agents to placate fans (as his father did). McCarthy will be back too. He’s not the best Head Coach but he’s also not their biggest problem.

Probably cost the Packers at least 1-2 more SB appearances with his conservative "no big name free agents" approach. Would leave gaping holes on the roster and force Rodgers to try and overcome that. Also had a prime Marshawn Lynch on his plate and idiotically passed. Imagine Lynch on the Packers and more importantly NOT on the Seahawks from 2010-2015.

Quote:
GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers have a new general manager.

Brian Gutekunst, director of player personnel and a 19-year veteran in the Packers’ personnel department, is president Mark Murphy’s choice to replace Ted Thompson.
Multiple sources confirmed a report from NFL Network that Gutekunst was going to be named general manager.
Gutekunst had been scheduled to interview Sunday for the Houston Texans' GM.
Gutekunst was one of three internal candidates interviewed for the job. The other two were vice president of football administration Russ Ball and director of football operations Eliot Wolf.

I don’t have much of an opinion on this. Seems like it’s not much of a change.

He is a Ron Wolf guy, not a Ted Thompson guy. He just continued to work under Thompson. I believe he is everything they wanted Eliot Wolf to develop into. Something happened with Wolf. He was being groomed for this job and it was right there and they went to the guy that has worked opposite him the last few years.

There should be a different drafting philosophy and approach to free agency with Gutekunst. Thompson always wanted athletes in the draft who many times ended up being soft as fuck. He also loved drafting 4-3 guys and turning them into shitty 3-4 guys.

The Bears shouldn't have been so quick to extend dingleberry. Wolf would have been available. He will be good wherever he ends up.
