I spent most of my formative years working with people who lived in the Robert Taylor Homes and worked for my dad, who came to this country with $75 sixty years ago. I have no idea what brought all of this on.
Where did I go "fucking assuming that you don't have some understanding of the challenges"?
I don't know anything about you to assume anything - in fact, I'd say you're clearly the one making assumptions here.

As for your specific aspirin example - it'd be more beneficial to give the people in need the actual aspirin than to give them a membership to Costco to go acquire the barrel of aspirin themselves...if they can get there. But there I go, making assumptions again!

How can I tell people to go to a Costco that doesn't exist?

CCFC, I like your idea, but I dont think it would work out in real life.

Like how would you get the 6 families together and who would go etc. Logistics would be tough.

Maybe a charity could actually do the shopping for some families in need. Maybe single parents who barely have time to sleep between jobs.

But the fact is, it's expensive to be poor and that sucks.

Yeah but Costco pays their employees like $20 an hour . No way can they compete with such high labor costs .

Exactly. The pizza there is like $12 a slice to compensate!

Quite the opposite...$1.50 for a footlong hotdog and a large fountain drink!

That was the joke.

It hearkens back to the debates of raising the minimum wage and therefore paying $83 dollars for a Big Mac to make up for it.

Hey, remember when people said that companies would push to automate much more if we did a $15 minimum wage?

Well, we didn't do a $15 minimum wage, and guess what, companies are pushing to automate as much as they can!

https://www.inquisitr.com/4735908/walmart-officials-plan-to-cut-thousands-of-jobs-through-store-closures-automation/
Quote:
Recode reports a Walmart company initiative, Project Kepler, is designed to create physical stores that will operate without cashiers and checkers. The stores will be promoted as making it easier for customers, but Walmart stores across the country have already installed more and more self-service lines that have enabled Walmart to trim the number of employees it needs.

Literally working on having no cashiers or checkers. Now, I'm actually fine with that, but it also shows that these companies aren't sitting around employing people just because they are nice. They want to automate every low paying job anyways.

There was a Sam's Club ad this morning where you scanned with your phone as you shopped and could skip the checkout, presumably paying by some linked card. I think the problem with this in the past has been shrinkage, but they do have their receipt checkers at the doors.

I saw that when I was at cardiac rehab, couldn't stop laughing. Talk about bad timing, let's just remind everybody (and read this in a Sam Kinison voice) "hey, pay without having to stand in line, at one of our many stores which is permanently closed."

I can't figure out why people with no spouse/no kids are shopping at places for 60-packs of toilet paper and the double gallon jugs of Hidden Valley ranch?

Or more importantly, why they feel so strongly about the feelings of the places where they shop for these things?

Because their inventory isn't just two products?

I held a Costco membership for 5 years before getting married. The savings add up if you purchase the correct items.

Avoid fresh produce and fresh meats as obviously you'll toss a bunch due to its large quantity. Plus grocery stores usually beat Costco's produce on price.
Gasoline is typically at least 5 cents cheaper than area gas stations.
Frozen foods (chicken breast, pizzas, fruit) are good deals
Packaged goods like peanut butter, almonds, dried fruit, chips are another area
Health items like mouth wash, aspirin, tooth brushes

It's really easy to avoid buying 60 rolls of toilet paper to make Costco worthwhile. Of course, sometimes other stores have a sale that beat certain items at Costco. But for the most part you're going to get a decent deal.

It only takes like 2 minutes of thought to understand how it's worth it.

Oh ya, I also forgot how much anyone absolutely looooves going to the grocery for non-perishable items. It is such a treat to find out you're out of ketchup or salad dressing.

If only there was a store where they sold large quantities of these items? Grrrrrrr, if only!

Costco has an incredibly simple and effective business model geared to the upscale market.

http://www.gis.smumn.edu/GradProjects/WolffB.pdf

Costco’s business model is to sell a
limited number of items, keep costs down,
rely on high volume, pay workers well,
have customers buy memberships, and aim
for upscale shoppers, especially smallbusiness
owners. In addition, Costco does
not advertise (Cascio, 2006).

Cascio (2006) states the average
annual income of Costco’s customers is
$74,000. Costco also targets college
educated households consisting of two or
more people (Morris, 2004).

I think Costco aims to break even (or a tiny profit) on the actual selling of merchandise and makes almost all their money on the selling of memberships.
