Jimmy Garoppolo just got paid.

The San Francisco 49ers made the free-agent quarterback the highest-paid player in NFL history on Thursday, signing Garoppolo to a five-year contract. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported that the deal is worth $137.5 million, per sources, and is the biggest deal in NFL history on an average-per-year basis.

Garoppolo joined John Lynch's Niners in a surprising midseason trade from the New England Patriots and, within three weeks in the building, earned the starting role. In six games and five starts, Jimmy G tore up the league, completing 67.4 percent of his passes for 1,560 passing yards, seven touchdowns and five interceptions. Garoppolo was slated to be an unrestricted free agent in March.

Around the NFL will have more on Garoppolo's pay day shortly.

Not surprised. Every year this happens with a younger Quarterback, everyone freaks out till the next young QB signs a record deal the next year. Wash, Rinse, Repeat.

This is reminiscent of the Scott Mitchell fiasco

Not really. It's only slightly more than Stafford and Carr and I think Garoppolo is better than Carr. They couldn't afford not to lock Jimmy G up.

Based on a short amount of work yes, but Mitchell was never considered to have the same potential that Garoppolo has.

Stafford and Carr have at least proven to be good, if not at times great, NFL QB's. Jimmy G has merely indicated that he CAN be that, not that he will. This time next year SF could easily be back on the hunt for a QB.

it may look bad at first, the Niners have very little talent. Their O Line is atrocious.

Which also makes not simply franchise tagging him overly optimistic.

But at the end of the day, I'm glad the athlete's getting paid

That's why the Jimmy for a 2nd rounder wasn't such a simple trade, because you immediately had to pay him.

I wonder when NFL teams will figure out that you aren't winning very much with a highly paid QB unless they are on a hall of fame trajectory. Maybe Lynch is right and he will be.

Only a matter of time before he grows an afro and starts kneeling for the anthem, now.

Or he's the next Matt Flynn?

Well they've spent three straight first round picks (two of those picks top 10, one top 5) on good-not-great defensive ends and now have the NFL's largest contract on their books. I don't know, optimism isn't springing eternal for me wrt the 49ers.

I know it was a short term but Garropolo not only looked good but he looked like a franchise. That team was transformed into a winning team simply by his presence
