It seems like the Red Sox had a knee jerk reaction to some short term discord with Devers.
Kap also had a bizarre take on this trade this morning. He claimed he spoke to a member of the Giants organization who told him that the city of San Francisco was in such bad shape that they had to seriously overpay any player to get them to go there. Jurko was filling in for Hood and immediately pushed back on that thought, but Kap persisted.
I get that San Francisco is not everyone's cup of tea, but it's not like it's Detroit or Cleveland.
Kap isn't totally wrong, they have had trouble attracting hitters but it's more about the ballpark and the tax rate.
Meanwhile, Boston will win this deal if they use the remaining 8 years of money that had committed to Devers in an overpay more efficiently. Rent a 1B at the deadline if they are still in a playoff race, give some of that money to Bregman to stay, maybe sign Schwarber for 4/95 to DH, bring in another #2-quality starter.
I don't think the Devers money is going to cover Bregman, Schwarber, and a #2 starter. If I were them I'd rather have the known commodity of Devers.
Schwarber is going to be an interesting free agent. He could settle into that fat old guy mould of 30 homeruns a year plus enough walks to make you look the other way on the low batting average, or he could do a Jose Abreu nose dive. We'll see how the market values him.
