The terms liberal and conservative were originally derived from religion. As I remember it the terms arose over the question of papal fallibility/infallibility. Those that were liberal tended to dismiss the notion that the Pope should remain infallible. Those that were Conservative tended to believe that the Pope should maintain an air of infallibility. Other things began to be extrapolated from these differences and eventually the terms were applied to business and politics.

You're forgetting that liberalism spans quite a spectrum. To say that liberal means just one thing would be like me tying you to Venezuela because you support Bernie. I'm sure you wouldn't appreciate that as it would be equally dishonest.
