It was almost time. The last glowing limb of the sun had settled below the waters to the west 10 minutes ago, venus glowed with increasing intensity above and to the left of the last vestiges of sunlight peering over the horizon. He looked at his partner and smiled to himself. She was a hunter, a killer whose last scrap of remorse had died years ago, and she glared below with determination and... maybe regret? Yes, he thought... regret. For what she had to do or for the fact this was nearly over he was unsure. Their target lay 3000 meters further up the beach. High winds tonight made their penultimate target a necessity. The two guards below had been relieved a hour ago and their relief was not scheduled for another 3 hours. 15 meters straight down the bluff. 15 meters of silent descent. Another glance over at her showed that she did not have any of the worry he did that they'd be able to pull this off. Her Browning Hi Power was at her hip, her favorite piece since seeing "Raiders of the Lost Ark" as an 8 year old girl with her daddy in the theater, but with a bit of luck and skill, there would be no call for its use tonight. This needed to be a silent kill. Luck was with them tonight. These guard had grown complacent, satisfied to swivel their heads north and south along the coastline but so far, not once looking up. "Let's hope neither of these guys is an astronomy buff" he thought to himself as he readied his paracord in his lanyard and stepped to the edge of the cliff in unison with her. The began their drop. They could hear the men chatting idly during their 5 minute journey. The game the night before. One of them lost $1,200 on the last minute field goal. He wouldn't need to worry about making his mortgage payment after all, he thought to himself. It would no longer be a concern. Hovering inches above his target she gave him a sign, and together they grabbed the chins of their marks and simultaneously slid their Ka-Bars into the carotid arteries of their quarry. Neither made more than a gurgling sound, but his... his looked into his eyes with a shocked look of disbelief, this couldn't be happening to him could it? They dropped their kills and swiveled upright and got their boots on the ground. Not a word had been spoken between them but they had told an entire story amongst themselves with their eyes. A cocked eyebrow up the coast from her, a fast nod from him. They were almost there. The plan was simple. Trent was known to go on the veranda at first dark and smoke his cigar with his Glenlivit. They would close to 100 meters. He was to confirm his identity as he illuminated his face with his Zippo lighting his cigar. He was to be alone tonight but verifying their target was of the upmost importance. She would put her bullet right into the ruddy red glow of his cigar as he took a draw. High tide several hours earlier had wet the sand and made the walk take a few minutes longer than they had planned. He saw the dim crack of light from inside as Trent made his way out on the porch when they were still 50 meters out from their chosen point, this distance would have to do. They dropped prone. He got his spotter scope and she slowly pulled back the bolt on her rifle and settled it into position. He could hear, or maybe it was just in his mind mn the distinctive snick of the lighter as it opened. Orange light positively illuminated his face. When he glanced to his left, she was already looking at him. He nodded. Focusing her attention on the scope, both eyes open, judging the wind and making one minor windage adjustment on her Leupold, the crosshairs settled on the glow of the cigar before her. Up to his mouth, a brightening, down to his waistline.... a moment passing, up to his mouth, a brightening.... she began timing her breathing. A slow inhale a moment before she anticipated the ascension of the glow, and as it settled to its zenith, she was already exhaling, 4 and a half pounds of pressure on the trigger, she finished her breath and squeezed.
