When in lived out west we’d always take visitors to the park because they wanted to see Yellowstone. I gave pictures somewhere of people, a lot with little kids getting way to close to bull elk and bison. Heard of people trying to approach moose cows with young calves. Bad idea. Talking to rangers during my fish and wildlife classes... the stories of stupid people.

The worst stories I’ve read about are about the hot springs.

National Park Service news release

On the afternoon of July 22, there was an incident with a bull bison near Observation Point Trail in the Old Faithful Geyser area.

According to witnesses, a group of approximately 50 people were within 5-10 feet of the bison for at least 20 minutes before eventually causing the bison to charge the group.

A nine-year-old girl from Odessa, FL was charged and tossed into the air by the bull bison.
The girl was taken to the Old Faithful Lodge by her family where she was assessed and treated by a park emergency medical providers, and later taken to and released from the Old Faithful Clinic.

No citations have been issued. The incident is still under investigation.

Wildlife in Yellowstone National Park are wild. When an animal is near a trail, boardwalk, parking lot, or in a developed area, give it space. Stay 25 yards (23 m) away from all large animals - bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, and coyotes and at least 100 yards (91 m) away from bears and wolves. If need be, turn around and go the other way to avoid interacting with a wild animal in close proximity.

I'm just going to assume you mean when you were 13 years old.

Finished off what, Bison? Terrible thought. Bison are gonna do what bison are gonna do.. This kid is lucky she isn't dead.

Here is another example of some not great parenting;

Quote:
A Georgia mother is accused of dropping and killing her baby during a fight at a beauty supplies store on Friday.

Karen Lashun Harrison, 26, was charged with felony murder, cruelty to children and simple battery after the incident in Moultrie, Ga., according to WLAB-TV.

The fight took place in the parking lot outside of the store. Police say Harrison dropped her three-month-old son on the pavement during the altercation.

The child landed on its head, and was taken to Colquitt Regional Medical Center for treatment the following day. It later died from injuries related to the fall.

I offered my 15 yr old one of FF beers at the Sox game.
Does that make me a bad parent?

Depends on what kind of beer it was.

Considering it was FF's beer and given the rate he spills at, there couldn't have been much left.

I enjoyed the brief part of a Doctor Phil that was on in the background (yeah right! -- I'll save you time) but the mom was at her wit's end with what to do with her daughter. Along the way, the mom sent a text that said "Why don't you kill yourself tonight? If you don't, I will." Fantastic job.

How about the grandfather who placed his granddaughter on the cruise ship window and let her fall out the other side. Now the parents are suing the cruise line because they can't face the fact their father is an idiot.

You sure she texted her daughter, and not whistler or vitoscotti?

bet those kibitzers i've met out hiking who proffer unsolicited "don't run if a bear / other wild animal charges, you become prey in their eyes if you run" never thought to bring along a spare 9 year old on a thru-hike. no bear's gonna gallop passed a tender 9 year old to chase after a broken-down, tough-to-chew old dude.

When I was at Yellowstone on a post-college graduation road trip I had a face to windshield confrontation with a massive grizzley bear. I had an Isuzu Rodeo at the time and was driving through the park when the bear crossed the street right in front of me. I stopped and it walked no more than a few feet in front of my car. it was easily the size of my entire truck. Other cars started stopping behind me. The bear went down an embankment about 30 feet below the road and started walking. People started getting out of the their cars and following the bear from the top of the hill. About 20 people. At that time I was n the best shape of my life and figured if the bear turned and charged I would be able to outrun at least 95% of the people. So I got out and followed as well. Bear never so much as turned and looked at us, just kept moving along.

so the kids came with me to my softball games 2 nights ago. a complex across the river shut down so we got an influx of teams over on our side.

as we are sitting in the bleachers between games, into the complex walks this man. like a 40+ yr old mexican man. He couldn't of been more than 4'6" tall with a big ole beer gut. He was dressed head to toe like a major league baseball player or better yet full on softball guy. arm bands, mframe oakleys, eyeblack, baseball pants, a baseball jersey of some sort. just strolling up to the diamonds with a cooler and a bat bag equal size to him. i take one look and try not to lose it, my 12 and 14 yr old daughters see him look at each other look at me and we all lose it. i basically made wisecracks about this poor guy for the entire game he played meanwhile i had my kids in tears (typical dad jokes, "who's back at the tree making cookies", that kind of thing).

they came home and told mom and sure enough i got a talkin to.

You would not believe stuff I see daily. I do medical pediatric equipment repair and wow. Just wow. Some of the parents are good, well meaning people and some are total crap and milk the system for all it is worth.
