My rich, (formerly) slutty sister and her parasitic boyfriend used to live close by and also went there a lot. I wonder if you ever bumped into them.

Yeah, CTR starts at $10k. Unless you make smaller deposits that exceed that amount and a commuter nerd believes they're suspicious.

What difference does it make where they live?

Ah ok. I thought it was bc if it’s over 600 you can’t just get cash at Jewel you have to fill out paperwork and therefore there’s a record of it

it is $600.01. i've hit the pick4 a few times and winnings from $600.01-$25k on one ticket, they'll cut you a check at the lottery office. anything above that, you'll need to wait weeks and get the check in the mail/go to springfield to get it after a few days - after the state makes sure you don't owe taxes/any liens/not paying child support. etc.

sure, the govt. now knows your business, but, if you itemize on your taxes, now you can deduct the losses.

i stopped playing the pick4 after losing interest in one number that never came/only boxed once or twice in 5 years - stopped playing both draws and yes, that combo came in on an evening play, after i only played the mid-day draw.

i used to play $3 straight-box. if it boxed, it's $600. collect the cash. if the straight came in, the ticket was worth $8.1k.

I understand how they arrived at it, but it would never occur to me to say Lincolnwood is "ten miles north of Chicago."

the exact location where Pulaski meets the bigoted suburbanites who insist on calling it by another name. Same motherfuckers who would scold you for not calling it Du Sable Lake Shore Drive.

OK. When you collect, they have a low threshold for beginning to take out the taxes. When you give, its 10K when they begin to consider you a drug lord*

a friend of a friend won huge at a casino, well into six figures. He didn't cash the chips. He had a team of guys to regularly go back and cash them in small amounts. My friend was one of the mules. I want to say he got a talking to by someone, but that may just be a false memory to make it a better story.

In the Fix Six the year the Breeders Cup was at Arlington, the consolations were big enough to be signers. So a lot of guys used ten percenters to cash their tickets. No one knew it was a fix until my friend Mike raised the red flag with the tote company. If that crazy longshot hadn't won the last leg they may have gotten away with it.

Anyway, they froze the payouts to the "winner" and recalculated the pool so the consolations were worth a whole lot more. If you had cashed the original consolation and signed you could go get the big payout. So the ten percenters did. Some of them didn't give the money to the actual bettor. What could the bettors say? "I used a strawman to cash so I could avoid taxes"?

I think that you meant to say where Pulaski becomes Crawford.

28% is lopped off for taxes. my experiences. whether single/joint filing, most are under a 28% income tax rate and eventually, even much lower effective rates. give to ceasar...then write off losses -if you itemize. if you don't itemize and win, you'll need to itemize. if that means saving losing tickets, so be it. my accountant insists that you can write off so much - the govt. assumes you play and are a loser - save the lucky ticket: so, unless you claim you lost $80k on lottery when your annual income is $110k, they won't audit. if you write off the losses, you'll get a hefty tax return check - due to overpaying on the winning sum and writing off the losses.

Here's a mistake I've seen racetrack guys make. They hit one or two signers where immediate withholding takes place and they want to write down losses to get that back so they match up a stack of losing tickets to get to a break even/loss point. But if you catch an audit the IRS guy is going to say, "Okay, so you're a regular player and you bet all year and you have these two big winners and every other bet you made was a loser? There were no tickets where you won but didn't have to sign?"

That's why you have to keep a ledger. I've been audited twice on gambling winnings/losses. The first time I had losing tickets to offset the signers but the agent wasn't having that. So I showed up at the next meeting with two big banker's boxes of racing programs. She allowed the write-offs and there was no change in my return. I had to pay my accountant for going to Morton Grove with me though.

The second time I had a ledger. Again, no change to my return. Just a pain in the ass to fuck around with these guys.

That's all moot now that I bet via ADW and I have a complete record of all wagers.

Oh god, there's a guy who writes for Streetsblog whose entire bit is just obsessing over "DuSable Lake Shore Drive." He's not even from here.

all things in moderation, i guess. obviously, the govt. has no set threshold. i'm thinking it depends on a few factors. the itemized gambling losses threshold (his theory) my accountant told me was apprx. 10% of someone's income. anything over that, chances are an audit is in store and you better have the losers that you itemized - in bankers boxes or hefty garbage bags.
