I still would like to know if Machado's people went to the Sox with the Padres' offer and asked them to match it.

The good news for the rest of the league is that Eloy will be a free agent in 6 years and the White Sox won't re-sign him if he's any good.

Maybe GoldenJet or FF can tell you exactly what happens since they seem to know all of the inner working of how things went down.

Kenny saying things like this is pretty silly. He should have just said something like, "Look, we made our best offer to the guy. It guaranteed him a quarter of a billion dollars. We went as high as we could, and he took another offer to play elsewhere. We're pissed off and upset that it didn't work out, but it is done and over with so we have to move on so we will not be talking about this any further."

They were stupid to have gone after Machado in the first place. It was delusional because he was not the fucking player that they needed at this time for a team as shitty as they are. BUILD you team with draft picks and young players obtained via trade. THEN and ONLY THEN go after a significant piece or two to take it to the next level. I think that this "move" was basically politics as in "look at us, we are a player in the winter meetings". And they even SUCKED at that and Kenny is a fucking idiot for what he said about the fan base. He always has to put out that arrogance that he is somehow the brightest bulb on the string. What he doesn't understand is that a bulb is brightest on the string right before it GOES OUT.

Exactly and wish him luck with the Padres.

If you are going to go with a contract that high, a 26 year old who will hold down 3b is the ideal signing. He's young enough to still be in his prime when all the prospects are in place. You wait for the prospects to establish themselves before going after a pitcher (like Lester with the Cubs) or a veteran hitter (like the Indians did in the 90s with Winfield, Murray, etc.).

He's not wrong.

This argument is just plan stupid. If the Sox really thought their offer was better then why not give him the 50MIL guaranteed for the 300MIL and not an incentive offer for 330MIL?

If the Sox are arguing that the incentives are easily reached, then why the hell not just offer him the 330MIL guaranteed?

I would rather they admit to being cheap then continue to look stupid.

C'mon Frank, you didn't need to be in any closed meetings about this. The Sox came out and said they don't believe in "opt-outs". They drew a line in the sand and chose not to cross it. They fucked up and can't admit it.

This is why fans give Rick Hahn a pass so often. Because Kenny can't leave bad enough alone and had to come out with this stupid fucking nonsense.

 Right.

This is comical.

When I posted the White Sox should be commended for trying I was joking. Apparently some believe that to be true.

Also, the history of the White Sox did not begin with losing out on Machado. They're cheap. Jerry is cheap. It is what it is.

He's got people conditioned to bring up 1 contract from 20 years ago to defend his spending.

Rack Him!

They guaranteed a quarter of a billion dollars over 8 years. If that was their best offer, then it was their best and you have to move on.

I read over at soxtalk an interesting observation. The Sox could have offered him a billion dollar contract over the next ten years and it would only have put them at #6 in payroll next year and back down to the middle of MLB in 2020.

If that contract was the best they can do, then it is time to get out of the baseball ownership business.

They aren't in the baseball business.

They're in the making money and fucking fans business.

And they're fucking pros at it.

The story broke when word of Machado’s signing appeared in a tweet by Jeff Passan of ESPN.

That leak prevented agent Danny Lozano from offering the White Sox a chance to meet or match San Diego’s offer

Why?

This doesn't make any sense.

But with that logic you would have no limit to what you’re willing to pay.

There WAS no limit, other than the market, to what they had the ABILITY to pay. If they had topped the Padres they would still be in the bottom third of the league in payroll this year with only $20 million in commitments next year.

Here is the (really a not the because there are several kicks) real kick in the nuts about KW statement: Machado's contract is really just a 5 year deal. It is far more likely that he will opt out than that he continues on with the contract at 31. That means he will be opting out of that contract a couple of years before the Eloy will be making his theoretical big contract push.

If you know KW, you know that he has frequently blamed the fan base for the teams woes.

Nope. They ain’t cheap.

Offers that do not get accepted dont count as spending.

I still contend that it wasn't even an offer because of the lack of the opt out, which Machado required.

$1 billion to a single player. GTFO with that nonsense. You can buy an entire franchise for a billion dollars.

Money wasnt going to be an issue with either Machado or Harper the Sox said.

Then there was a number they just couldn't go to.

Unless you know for sure you have a blank check, don't go out and tell fans that money won't be an issue.

you thick douche, the point is that even using a ridiculous, hypothetical contract, they still would have been in a manageable payroll

I thought you were done with being a Sox fan anyway? You're doing an awful lot of posting about them for somebody who says this franchise is on their pay no mind list.

Yep, they said it. They must have already been implying that the opt-out was going to be the deal breaker.
